My Cosy Nightcap With A Cannibal

Byline: JOHN EDWARDS                                                  DEEP in the night Bokassa sat half asleep on a brocaded sofa in his palace and gurgled the end of a bottle of Chivas Regal into the glass he was using.                          The glass was rimmed with gold.                          He was a stunning sight in an ice-white Pierre Cardin suit which he made the tailors fly in from France to fit loosely around his tough, stocky body.                          And before they were told where to deliver the shoes he had on, Bally in Geneva made sure the buckles were of solid gold.                          The walking stick he fiddled with was mostly of ebony, but had a hand-worked solid ivory handle inlaid with silver bands and one hoop of gold. His Rolex had many diamonds around the face and there was a diamond ring on one finger which was so big he must have had help to slide it on.                                       As he appeared he could have been sold for more money than lay in the Central Bank. And that's how this man lived in his roaring, monstrous days out there in his all-jungle country which was the Central African Republic and consisted of Jean Bedel Bokassa, Emperor, and a few million people who were so terrorised they couldn't even breathe properly.                          Pilage and rape were mostly Viking tricks. Bokassa prefered eating people. On some sagging evening of entertainment he always knew how to liven things up.                          He would have the head jailer at the state prison bus over a few political prisoners and invite them to fight bare-handed with his pet lions.                          You go to see someone like this in the middle of the night and it gives you plenty to think about.                          There were many clues about just how popular Bokassa was. Only two people were on the longflight from Paris into the capital city, Bangui. Me and Monty Fresco, this newspaper's most experienced photographer.                          At Bangui there was a riot just to see how many could get on the same plane when it went back. Bokassa had both of us arrested soon we stepped off the jumbo.                                             Being arrested in Bangui usually turned out the same as disappearing from the face of the earth.                          Bokassa was intrigued, though. He decided to give an interview three days later. Secret police, guys in YSL Bags Replica striped suits and sunglasses, marched us from the Rock Hotel where we were under house-arrest. It was 2am, a deadly hour for bad thoughts and evil images.                          The drive to the White Palace was through jungle that lapped onto the road. The headlights swept over some startled pigmies. Huge animals followed the pigmies back into the jungle.                          The palace was covered in the white beams of floodlights, a sensation in the middle of the absolute dark of the jungle. Bokassa was in the throne room. He looked angry and full of threat. The room was bursting with treasure.                          He put his whisky on the onyx table with gilt legs which was in front of him.                          `We are honoured to be here with you Your Majesty,' you opened up with in front of Bokassa. He waved us into a pair of wonderful chairs. `Louis D'Or,' he said, The Sun King, Louis X1V. `Why are you here?' was the next thing he said. He made it sound like: `How do you want to die?'                          The point really was to talk about the coronation he was planning as Emperor, which was going to cost only $10 million. Just a few people in the country knew how many noughts there were in such a figure.                          Bokassa drank Chivas like it was cold tea. He put it neat right to the top of the tumblers. When the first bottle dried up a
