Now, thanks to a television project, four volunteers have had the chance to step outside themselves and experience life in a different coloured skin. After being transformed by several hours in a makeup chair, the two men and two women were sent out on to the streets to gauge the reactions of those they met. Daniel, a 37-year-old black man from North London who owns a record company and a hairdressing business, found people much less wary of him as a white man. 'People don't look back at you once you've passed them,' he said. 'They don't clutch their handbags quite so hard. 'In white skin, I was more invisible. When I went to Walthamstow dogs as myself, I was stared at. But when I went as a white guy, white people would stand right next to me with a wedge of money in their hands and not move away slightly. 'I went to a black comedy night with a black female friend and as I was the only "white" person in the audience I expected to experience some bigotry. 'I thought there would be some looks and some attitude. But it didn't happen.' Carolyn, a 42-year- old white nurse from Doncaster, spends time with an Asian family both before and after her transformation. They say that her makeup allows her to pass convincingly for an Asian woman. Carolyn goes shopping on her own for Asian clothes, then is joined by her white husband Kevin. The two later share a meal out. 'I felt isolated at times,' said Carolyn. 'I didn't want to step out of line. I can imagine Asian people might feel the same way. 'Everybody has probably got a little bit of racism inside them. It is a bit yuck to be honest. 'When I was back as a white person I Cheap christian audigier felt really strange. I did this to enhance my understanding of Asian culture.' Simon, a 35-year-old freelance illustrator from Thame, Oxfordshire, admitted that his character had changed during his days as a black man. 'As black me, I expected to get abuse from white people, but that didn't happen,' he said. 'The differences were mainly in me. My reactions really took me by surprise-At one point I went shopping-with my wife Sue, who is white, in Oxford. Two guys nudged each other, whispered something, then laughed. 'I reacted in quite an aggressive way. I wanted to confront them. As a white man, I would not have known what they found so funny, but as a black person I made the assumption that they were making fun of my skin colour. 'I was much more assertive and positive as black me than I am as white me. It was quite liberating and I was disappointed when the experiment ended.' For Simon's make- over, tiny hoops were wedged into his nostrils to flare them, and his head was shaved before his skin was dyed. He was offered a gold tooth, but fought against it because he thought it was stereotyping. embroidered patches The final volunteer was Sofina, a 24-year-old Asian from Birmingham who is studying psychology. She works in a pie and mash shop in East London when she is in white makeup.
